Charles Spencer, the founder of the ILA 1408 Scholarship Fund in Jacksonville, FL was honored by the Jacksonville Jaguars for being a community champion. The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) is the largest union of maritime workers in North America and it provides their members with an education fund to pay for college tuition.
In total, more than three-quarters of a million dollars has been given out in scholarships from this fund since its inception. This scholarship money has been used by many people who may not have otherwise had access or opportunity to go to college.
